Elections & Voting
Voting is a right of every American citizen. Every vote counts. You may register to vote if:
- You are a citizen of the United States.
- You are a resident of Iowa.
- You will be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day.
NOTE: If you are 17½ years old, you may register to vote, but your registration will not be effective until your 18th birthday.
You can't register online …yet. But we can provide you with an Iowa Voter Registration form. You will need to have Acrobat Reader [download Acrobat free], then simply print the Voter Registration Form and follow the directions on the form.
Change of Address
If you move within the county where you are registered to vote, you may change your address before the close of registration:
- By notifying the county auditor in writing. Include your full name as it appears on the voter registration records, your old and new addresses, and your signature. If more than one person is submitting a change, each person must sign the notice.
- By completing a postcard registration form. Only one change may be submitted on each postcard.
- By making the change in person at the county auditor's office or other registration sites.
Motor Voter
An application for or a renewal of a driver's license will serve as an application for voter registration -- unless the applicant does not sign the voter registration application portion of the form. The voter registration portion of the form must include:
- A statement specifying eligibility requirements for voter registration (including citizenship)
- An attestation that the applicant meets these requirements
- The applicant's signature under penalty of perjury
- A statement that assures confidentiality and the absence of coercion. The voter registration portion of the form may not require more information than is necessary to ensure that an applicant is eligible to register to vote and to prevent duplicate registrations. Any driver's license change-of-address form will serve as notification of an address change for voter registration, unless the person states that the address is not for voter registration purposes.
Voter registration applications received at state motor vehicle agencies must be transmitted to the appropriate election office within 10 days, or within 5 days if it is received 5 days or less before the deadline.
