Council Bluffs and Pottawattamie County is the Purple Martin Capitol of Southwest Iowa.

A playground designed by children, reflecting their vision of an ultimate playground. At Lake Manawa State Park- camping, trails, boating, picnicking. Built in 1993.
The park's 1,529 acres encompass a beautiful 660 acre natural lake. Campground provides space for 72; 37 are equipped with electric hookups. Modern shower, restroom facilities, and trailer dump station are available. Open picnic shelters are located around the lake. These may be reserved by ontacting the park manager.
A shelter with fireplace and kitchen facility is a recent addition. A nature trail with a paved surface is offered to walkers and the mobility-impaired. A paved bike trail within the park has been constructed and connects to the Western Historic Trails Cener, Council Bluffs trail system, and the Wabash Trace Nature Trail.
Lake Manawa is a premier boating spot, a favorite spot for anglers of all ages, and great place for swimmers and sunbathers. It is also a great winter playground!

America’s first coast-to-coast highway in early 1900s passes through Council Bluffs. Cut time on a trip that had taken up to 90 days prior to 1913 down to six days in 1915.
Loess Hills Scenic Byway
All along the western edge of Iowa and into Missouri
Rated among the best in the nation. The 220 miles of paved highway in seven counties along the Missouri River valley offers views of the steep, sharply-ridged hills, which support a number of rare plants and animals only found in the Loess Hills. Automobile tours offer ridge-top views, woodlands, prairies and landmarks. The Byway is clearly marked - just follow the special blue and white signs along the trail.
The Loess Hills Hospitality Association provides visitors with maps and information about unique viewing points. Gift shop features arts and crafts by local artisans.
