    School Assistant – 4PLUS
    Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired has an opening for a full-time school assistant. This is a school year position (no work and no pay during school breaks such as summer break). The position primarily supports the 4PLUS Program, a transition program for young adults, as an aid to students with visual impairments.

    Primary Function:
    Under the supervision of assigned staff member, works directly with students in activities programmed by the supervisor. Primary responsibilities include providing support to 4PLUS Program for students who are blind or visually impaired. Responsibilities also include providing support to Iowa School for the Deaf (ISD) programs, as needed. Duties require the ability to work in a group or one-on-one with a student to provide additional support and assistance. Duties also require the ability to show concern for and present a positive example to students with disabilities, and the ability to exercise responsible judgment in routine and emergency situations. May include providing on-the-job guidance and encouragement to the student as they develop daily living skills and healthy habits while they work for an employer or volunteer in the community as part of the 4PLUS program. In the job-coaching role, school assistant writes documentation about the supports provided to student while on-the-job.

    Minimum Eligibility Requirements:
    Ability to read, write and follow instructions required. Experience working with students who are blind or visually impaired strongly preferred. Candidates with the State of Iowa Paraeducator Certificate; or 2 years of related college courses; or COMPASS score of 150 (Reading score of 57, a Writing score of 50, and a Math score of 43) also strongly preferred. Willingness to learn braille preferred.
    Completion of the National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC) is recommended. The NCRC may be completed at any Iowa Workforce Development Office. Please include information for verifying your NCRC certification level with your application materials.

    Wage:
    $15.17 /hour (school year 2022-2023 pay). Comprehensive benefit package.

    Position Details:
    Full-time, School-year appointment. Position is located at the Iowa School for the Deaf campus in Council Bluffs, IA. Work schedule is typically Monday – Friday, 7:30 AM – 3:30 PM, while school is in session. Some weekends or evenings may be required if supporting students for job coaching. Position starts as soon as possible. Criminal and other relevant background checks required.
