Children’s Square is a private, non-profit, non-denominational organization with a history of caring for children and families for 138 years. Every day we provide programs and services to over 1,000 children, youth and families in Iowa and Nebraska. With an annual operating budget of $10 million and 150 employees, we offer programs and services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our main campus is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa and an office in Omaha, Nebraska offers counseling and foster care programs.

The President & CEO is broad-gauged human services leader equally experienced with the management of a children’s residential facility as with the provision of educational, early childhood, behavioral health and community/home-based services for children and their families. The President & CEO works closely with the Board of Directors to communicate and achieve the mission and vision, advance strategic priorities, promote a positive organizational workplace culture and provide the necessary administrative oversight for Christian Home Association - Children’s Square U.S.A. and affiliate corporations.
This position has overall authority and responsibility for the leadership and management of the organization, its staff, programs and services provided. The President & CEO is responsible for the implementation of policies developed in consultation with the Board of Directors with respect to ethics, governance, financials, human resources, fund development, risk management, client rights, programs and services and performance and quality improvement. The President & CEO is also responsible for being the face and voice of the organization and for working with the Board to secure adequate resources to meet current and strategic needs.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for carrying out the mission, vision, strategic priorities, policies, procedures and programs established in consultation with the Boards of Directors of all corporations.
- Partner with all stakeholders including Board(s), staff, partner organizations and supporters to create and implement a strategic plan.
- Responsible to the Boards of Directors for the overall operations of the organization(s) including control, use and conservation of physical and financial assets, staff recruitment and direction, program operations, planning processes/plan implementation and fundraising.
- Plan, prepare, direct, monitor and report on the organizational budget(s) and financial matters in consultation with the Chief Financial Officer, Resources Committee of the Board and affiliate corporations.
- Responsible for staff management including interviewing, hiring, training associates for continued growth and development; planning, assigning and directing work; performance evaluations; recognizing and celebrating employee success and addressing performance issues in a timely manner; addressing concerns and resolving problems.
- Maintain executive responsibility for compliance with state licensing and national accreditation activities, applicable regulatory requirements, Nonprofit of the Midlands Principles, Practices and Infrastructure, risk management and performance/quality improvement.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with community organizations and leaders; represent the agency at the local, state and national levels.
- Maintain executive responsibility for the negotiation, preparation and renewal of service contracts and agreements.
- Provide appropriate direction to the Boards of Directors regarding Board roles, responsibilities, orientation, program development or modifications, reporting functions, future plan and strategic goals.
- Attend or be represented by a designee at all meetings of the Boards of Directors and Board Committees.
- Serve as the liaison between the Boards of Directors and staff.
- Serve as a first or second signature on checks. In addition, sign any deeds, mortgages, bonds, contracts, documents acknowledging gifts to the organization or other instruments which the Boards of Directors have authorized to be executed.
- Work with the legal advisor(s) to anticipate and address legal affairs of the organization.
- Perform all duties of the office of the President & CEO and other duties as prescribed by the Boards of Directors from time to time.
- Serve in accordance with Board policies governing conflict of interest, accountability and delegation of authority.
- Maintain active involvement with targeted professional, civic and charitable organizations to develop and nurture Company’s image.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required; preferably in non-profit management, social/public services human services or related discipline.
- An advanced degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the organization’s mission and services preferred.
- Ten years of experience managing a large child and/or family human services agency preferred.
- At least five years of related leadership experience.
- The skills to oversee human resources and financial management matters.
- Competence in administering services to families, adults, youth and/or children preferred.
- The ability to work effectively and proactively with other providers and local, state and federal entities.
- Experience raising substantial funds from private sources, foundations, corporations and individuals.
- A valid driver's license and automobile insurance that meets agency policy is required.
- The ability to move around the campus and community in all weather conditions.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential job duties and responsibilities.
