Volunteer Safety GuidelinesÂ
Your safety is our top priority! These guidelines are here to help keep everyone safe and make sure the Adopt-A-Street is a positive experience. Group leaders should use their best judgment, and all volunteers are encouraged to stay alert, take care of themselves, and look out for one another.Â
General SafetyÂ
- Dress for the weather—closed-toed shoes, long pants, and sturdy gloves are recommended. Hats, sunscreen, and insect repellent are also a good idea.Â
- Work only during daylight hours and when the weather is favorable.Â
- Bring plenty of water and take breaks to avoid overexertion, especially in hot weather.Â
- Stay with your group—working in pairs or small groups is the safest way to go.Â
- Always be aware of your surroundings, including weather changes, wildlife, traffic, and plants like poison ivy or wild parsnip.Â
Equipment & VisibilityÂ
- Wear a safety vest or bright-colored clothing when near roadways so you can be easily seen.Â
- Keep a first aid kit handy at the cleanup site.Â
- Use proper lifting techniques when handling heavy or bulky items—lift with your legs, not your back.Â
What NOT to DoÂ
- Do not pick up trash directly from road surfaces.Â
- Do not handle hazardous items like needles, chemicals, sharp objects, or dead animals.Â
- Do not clean areas that look unsafe, like steep slopes, hard-to-reach places, or overhangs.Â
- Do not leave filled trash bags near railroad tracks or in areas that block pathways.Â
- Do not participate if under the influence of alcohol or drugs.Â
